This study examines the use of Arabic on social networking sites. After the advent of the Internet, the world witnessed a revolution in the field of media and communication. This resulted in creating new opportunities for individuals to interact, communicate and integrate with others through the second generation of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. There becomes a virtual world parallel to the real world, in which some relationships are built while others are undone. It is also a space where friends and relatives interact. The virtual world has thus become a wide arena that covers all aspects of our daily lives. This has created several problems owing to the influences these sites have on our lives; our identity, our customs and culture, and even our language.Language is a critical means of communication over these modern communication channels. The reality of the Arabic language in our society is not without flaws and gaps. It is a painful reality that the Arabic language in Algeria has endured since the French colonization which implemented deliberate policies to obliterate Arab identity and culture. However, mobile phones and social networking sites gave rise to language phenomena and practices that worsened this situation. This bitter reality of the Arabic language is what made us study this subject, by trying to investigate the following problematic: What is the reality of the use of students of the University of Adrar for Arabic on social networking sites? Thus, our research seeks to uncover the reality of students' use of Arabic on social networking sites, and to identify the various linguistic phenomena that are in common use, in order to determine the impact of the social networking websites on our language. In this study, we have reached the general conclusion that the relationship between Arabic and social media is inter-dimensional and can be approached from different angles. There are many factors (psychological, social, economic, technical ...) that determine the language to be used in communication. And the most common linguistic phenomena on the social networks are the use of colloquial Arabic and writing Arabic in Latin characters and using special symbols. This reflects the painful reality of the Arabic language on these sites and how its existence became threatened by these intrusive forms, which attracted a considerable number of social networks users, including university students.en_US
