Abstract

This study aims to measure the effect of the devaluation of the Algerian dinar on the Algerian trade balance through an empirical study. The model was estimated based on the ordinary least square estimation method “OLS” by using EVIEWS 09 software. The study concluded that the devaluation of the Algerian dinar adversely affects exports outside of hydrocarbons, while affecting positively the exports of hydrocarbons because of the structure of Algeria’s exports which relies largely on hydrocarbons. The devaluation of the Algerian dinar has a direct impact on imports, this evidence supports the inflexibility of demand for imports in Algeria. The devaluation of the Algerian dinar has a negative impact on Algeria's trade balance. This result is inconsistent with the economic theory “Export promotion and import substitution”.
