The Touat region in southern Algeria is a historically rich area, known for its remarkable contributions and intellectual brilliance. It is one of the most significant regions in preserving history in all its forms and fields, including science, social life, judiciary, trade, and economy,. History has preserved both its legacy and its historical landmarks. Touat has always been, and continues to be, one of the foremost scholarly centers, with its wealth of manuscript libraries providing tangible evidence of the efforts of Touat’s scholars, sheikhs, and judges. It reached a remarkable level of scholarly achievement, earning a prestigious status that rivaled major intellectual centers such as Tlemcen, Kairouan, and Fez, especially during the 12th and 13th centuries AH (18th and 19th centuries CE). Among the most prominent scholars of the Touat region is the distinguished scholar: Muhammad bin Muhammad Al-A‘la Al-Zajlawi, who passed away in 1212 AH. He left behind a rich scholarly legacy that reflects his mastery and depth of knowledge, spanning various fields such as jurisprudence, exegesis, linguistics, grammar, and more. One of his most important works is his commentary on Mukhtasar Sidi Khalil, much of which remains in manuscript form. This commentary has begun to emerge into the light through scholarly editing and publication, bringing it from manuscript vaults to the hands of researchers and students. We were honored to contribute to its editing and publication, particularly from the beginning of the chapter on prayer to the end of the chapter on succession (al-istikhlāf). The work plan for this blessed project was divided into two main parts: the study section and the critical edition section. The study section consisted of three chapters. The first chapter focused on introducing the author, Muhammad Al-Zajlawi, and included three sections, each further divided into various topics and subtopics. The second chapter was dedicated to introducing the author of the original text, Sheikh Khalil ibn Ishaq. This chapter comprised two sections, also divided into topics and subtopics. The third chapter was devoted to a study of Al-Zajlawi’s commentary on Mukhtasar Khalil, and it included two sections with their own respective topics and subtopics. As for the critical edition section, I 201 endeavored to present the manuscript text as faithfully and accurately as possible to the original version authored by Al-Zajlawi. This was done by adhering to the standard methodology of manuscript editing, most notably by comparing different manuscript copies and verifying the cited sources, all of which contribute to producing a text that closely resembles the author's original work. |
