The Use of English for Aviation between Air Traffic Controllers and Pilots, The Control Tower of Adrar Airport as a Case Study

Abstract

English is the language of international air traffic. Generally, all communication between controllers and pilots with different mother tongues takes place in English. This research is about the use of English language between pilots and Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) and the need to comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO’s) language proficiency requirements. It clarifies the way in which the standard phraseology is used, and explains the necessity of improving plain English, which is required in non-routine situations. It also reveals some difficulties related to the use of English that encounter ATCs and pilots and suggests solutions to overcome these difficulties. Adrar Airport where the research was conducted like other airports is required to comply with the international standards concerning the aviation language proficiency. However, aviation is an evolutionary field, new technologies are introduced which requires an update of the language being used. Aviation personnel should be familiar with, and have to enhance their English language ability in both types of aviation English, which are phraseology, and plain English. Concerning phraseology, it is proved through usage that some expressions are more appropriate than others; some of them show ambiguity and need to be modified, replaced or removed. On the other hand, ATCs and pilots are expected to use plain English in non-routine situations and should be as clear and concise as possible. They must improve their ability in the language skills specified by ICAO (namely pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interaction). To reach the objectives of this research, both qualitative and quantitative methods were used including interviews, questionnaires and observation.

اللغة الإنجليزية هي لغة الحركة الجوية الدولية. بشكل عام، تتم جميع الاتصالات بين مراقبي الحركة الجوية والطيارين بلغات أم مختلفة، باللغة الإنجليزية. يدور هذا البحث حول استخدام اللغة الإنجليزية بين الطيارين ومراقبي الحركة الجوية والحاجة إلى الامتثال لمتطلبات الكفاءة اللغوية لمنظمة الطيران المدني الدولي. يوضح هذا البحث الطريقة التي يتم بها استخدام العبارات القياسية، ويشرح ضرورة تحسين اللغة الإنجليزية البسيطة، وهو أمر مطلوب في المواقف غير الروتينية. يكشف أيضًا عن بعض الصعوبات المتعلقة باستخدام اللغة الإنجليزية التي تواجه مراقبي الحركة الجوية والطيارين ويقترح حلولًا للتغلب على هذه الصعوبات. مطار أدرار حيث سيتم إجراء الدراسة، مثل المطارات الأخرى وهو مطلوب للامتثال للمعايير الدولية المتعلقة بإتقان لغة الطيران. ومع ذلك، يعد الطيران مجالًا تطوريًا، حيث يتم إدخال تقنيات جديدة تتطلب تحديثًا للغة المستخدمة. يجب أن يكون المستخدمون على دراية ويجب عليهم تحسين قدراتهم في اللغة الإنجليزية في كلا جانبي اللغة الإنجليزية، وهما: العبارات واللغة الإنجليزية البسيطة. فيما يتعلق بالعبارات، ثبت من خلال الاستخدام أن بعض التعبيرات أكثر ملاءمة من غيرها, ؛ بعضها يُظهر الغموض ويجب تعديله أو استبداله أو إزالته. من ناحية أخرى، من المتوقع أن يستخدم مراقبي الحركة الجوية والطيارون اللغة الإنجليزية البسيطة في المواقف غير الروتينية ويجب أن تكون واضحة ومختصرة قدر الإمكان. يجب عليهم تحسين قدراتهم في مجالات المهارات التي تحددها منظمة الطيران المدني الدولي (النطق، البنية، المفردات، الطلاقة، الفهم والتفاعل) للوصول إلى أهداف هذا البحث، يتم استخدام الأساليب الكمية والنوعية بما في ذلك المقابلات والاستبيانات والملاحظة.
