PREVALENCE AND REASONS OF CODE SWITCHING IN ALGERIAN EFL CLASSES

Abstract

Code-switching as a sociolinguistic phenomenon has highly spread in the Algerian EFL classrooms. The research attempts to examine code-switching and its functions in the Algerian EFL classrooms and discover the factors that lead both teachers and learners to code-switch between English and their mother tongue. The latter can be Arabic or Zenete in the studied region. In rare cases, it might be French. For undertaking this piece of research, a survey will be conducted to collect numerical data through the use of questionnaires handed to 2 Secondary Schools’ teachers and learners in Timimoun. The research is an analysis to learners’ and teachers’ communication in EFL classes. It is a quantitative research that gives numerical data about the use of code switching, its frequency, and its reasons. The sample consists of one hundred and twenty (120) learners and 5 teachers. The findings of the study are given in details and interpreted in the last section proving the existence of code-switching in EFL classes in Timimoun and measuring its frequency. The final aim of the study is to reveal the attitude of both teachers and learners towards code-switching during English sessions but there is no doubt that measuring attitudes needs extra research.

انتشر التناوب اللغوي كظاهرة اجتماعية لغوية بشكل كبير في فصول تعليم اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية. يحاول البحث فحص وجود التناوب اللغوي ووظائفه اثناء تعليم وتعلم اللغة الانجليزية أثناء الحصص المؤطرة ضمن التعليم العمومي في الجزائر واكتشاف العوامل التي تقود المعلمين والمتعلمين إلى التبديل بين اللغة الإنجليزية ولغتهم الأم. يمكن أن تكون الأخيرة عربية أو زناتية في المنطقة المدروسة. في حالات نادرة ، قد تكون اللغة الأم هي اللغة الفرنسية. لإجراء هذا البحث ، سيتم إجراء مسح لجميع البيانات الرقمية التي جمعت من خلال استخدام الاستبيانات التي تم تسليمها إلى مدرسين ومتعلمين في مدرستين ثانويتين بتيميمون. البحث عبارة عن تحليل لتواصل المتعلمين والمعلمين أثناء حصص اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية وهو بحث كمي يعطي بيانات حول دوافع استخدام التناوب اللغوي وتكراره وأسبابه. تتكون العينة من مائة وعشرين (120) متعلمًا و 5 أساتذة في الثانويتين. تم تقديم نتائج الدراسة بالتفصيل وتم تفسيرها في القسم الأخير لإثبات وجود التناوب اللغوي أثناء تدريس وتعلم اللغة الانجليزية في حصصها المخصصة وقياس تواترها . الهدف النهائي من الدراسة هو الكشف عن موقف كل من المعلمين والمتعلمين اتجاه التناوب اللغوي أثناء الحصص ولكن ليس هناك شك في أن قياس المواقف يحتاج إلى مزيد من البحث.
