نجد الإمام محمد بن أبي ليلى من الرواة الذين اختلفت أقوال النقاد فيه جرحا وتعديلا، بسبب يكاد يَجمعون عليه؛ من سوء حفظه، أمَّا من وصفه بالتعديل، أمثال ابن أبي حاتم والعجلي والذهبي وابن حبان وغيرهم، فقد ركَّزوا على حالته العامة، المتمثلة في الجانب السلوكي، كونه إماما قاضيا فقيها من أفقه أهل الدنيا، عالما بالقرآن، وهذا وحده غير كاف في الحكم على الراوي؛ دون النظر إلى الجانب العلمي، تعديلا وتجريحا وقبولا لروايته. فنخلص إلى أن ابن أبي ليلى ضعيف بسوء حفظه، لا يمكن أن ترد روايته مطلقا، فقد تقبل روايته إذا توبعت برواية غيره في نفس الحديث
