This dissertation examines the authority of space and setting in narrative poetics through a semiotic reading of selected novels by Abdelhamid Benhedouga, Tahar Wattar, and Ahlam Mosteghanemi. The study assumes that space and setting are not mere narrative backdrops, but active elements in shaping the text and producing meaning, guiding the course of events and influencing characters, the narrator, and the plot. The research adopts a semiotic approach to analyze spatial and setting signs and uncover their relationships with narrative meanings, highlighting their role in directing the narrative discourse and enriching textual poetics. The findings reveal that space in Benhedouga’s novels reflects social transformations and value conflicts, while in Wattar’s works it acquires a symbolic and ideological dimension, contributing to the deconstruction of the characters’ intellectual structures. In Mosteghanemi’s novels, space becomes a realm of memory, identity, and nostalgia, where the individual intersects with collective and national dimensions. The study concludes that the authority of space and setting manifests in guiding the narrative, shaping its rhythm, and producing a multi-layered network of meanings, making them central to understanding the narrative discourse. The semiotic reading emphasizes the need to view space as an active agent in constructing meaning and narrative aesthetics, rather than merely a static frame for events
